Hugh Howard. 1675— 1737. Portrait Painter. Sale, Sotheby’s, December 12th (8 days), 1873, and November 27th (2 days), 1874 £ 7,636 11 s. 6d. "In all probability, most of the Prints and Drawings owned by Mr. Howard were obtained at the distribution of that portion of Sir Peter Lely’s effects, which, at the death of Prosper Henri Lankrinck was sold to pay the money the last had bor­rowed to purchase them with, for many of the finer ones bear the latter painter’s stamp; but others, which bear the initials of the first-named collector, are thereby guaranteed to be of more than ordinary ment and value. Some of these articles are im­ pressed with the well-known star, which is generally supposed to denote specimens originally belonging to the great Earl of Arundel.” (Sale Catalogue.)
